Our home is an ongoing experiment, forever changing as I bring in new pieces and try new things. I love experimenting with fresh and innovative ideas. Many of my clients squirm at the idea, but in the end, if I’m not willing to try something in my own space, how can I convince a client to do it in theirs?

Built in 1973, our four-bedroom, 1,374 square foot four-level split gives me lots of different rooms to play in. Sometimes things work, and sometimes they don’t. I would have to say my distinguishing style is mid-century modern, eclectic and a hint of tradition, flared with lots of color. My favorite room in our home would have to be our living room, because it has the most art in it.

I am the wife of a pastor, and a mother of three: two boys, who have just left the nest this year and a daughter who hasn’t spread her wings yet. I am thankful she shares the same decor taste as me. One day while she was at school, I sold her furniture to redo her room, all because I wanted to paint a geographic pattern on her wall! My kids never know what they are going to come home to.

I am also the owner on my own interior design business in Red Deer. It is Alberta’s third-most-populous city – after Calgary and Edmonton. What I love most about it Red Deer is you can get anywhere in the city using a bike path. The park system here is amazing and beautiful, it is also just out my back door.

I’m constantly on the hunt for that next sweet find on Kijiji; I love anything mid-century, and unique pieces that you wouldn’t find in your local store. One of my favorite finds was a piece from Allermuir. Furniture goes in and out of our home almost monthly. I also really value having lots of good art in our home, and have spent years curating an eclectic collection from local artists, thrift stores, and friends.

At the end of the day, everyone’s space tells a story. Your home reflects who you are – maybe that’s why mine is a little crazy! Jeannie, from “I dream of Jeannie” would be comfortable living in our home.

All joking aside, being the owner of Novus Designs here in Red Deer, has truly given me a lot of exposure to many different types and styles of homes, mid-century being my favorite. To create a home you truly love, I think it needs to reflect who you are with the things you hold dear in your space. This is what I try and do for my clients, and it is a joy for me.

Thanks, Nicole!
