Natural light pours in through large windows, warming Tiffany and Alan’s Austin bungalow. Tiffany’s background in fashion and the couple’s traveling adventures have inspired chic yet playful interior design. In just nine months, they have creatively remodeled the home to make their space feel open and airy. This modern meets traditional Austin dream-home is perfectly designed for friends and family to gather and enjoy each other’s company.

Apartment Therapy Survey:

My Style: We like using modern pieces and unassuming elements, while respecting the original character of a space.

Inspiration: We find inspiration everywhere — the places we’ve traveled, the cities we’ve lived in and the people and things we love.

Favorite Element: When we first drove up to this house we were immediately enamored by the number of windows. Good fenestration (Alan took an architecture class once upon a time) can be easily overlooked. We get so much wonderful natural lighting and there’s really nothing like cracking open the windows on a crisp fall day.

Biggest Challenge: To counter our favorite element, when we were buying the house we learned that all of the original wood-frame windows were painted shut and many were cracked. We wanted to preserve the feel of the home, but weren’t on a budget to replace the windows with exact replicas. This took us down a long and winding road of window education that, probably unfortunately, made us celebrities at our local Home Depot’s window and door department.

What Friends Say: We remodeled a significant portion of our house and started off living out of the guest room for about a month. With so many projects going on, our friends were always asking what was new and encouraging us in the moments where we thought it would never end. Those questions have carried forward as we continue to make little changes and add small pieces to keep things fresh.

Biggest Embarrassment: We absolutely love having fresh flowers and plants in our home, but our thumbs are far from green. From maintaining our jungle of a backyard to revolving through more fiddle leaf fig trees than we can count, we have really struggled to maintain a consistent roster of flora.

Proudest DIY: It may seem insignificant, but we have a stool that I painted and upholstered and I’m actually really proud of it. DIYs are almost never as easy as they seem to be, so we have a hearty respect for the craft.

Biggest Indulgence: Hosting. When we moved back to Austin from New York, we were set on prioritizing building a community and welcoming people into whatever space we lived in. Once a week we get the opportunity to host some dear friends from our church group in this humble abode and that alone has instilled so much more character to this home than we could ever design. We are always looking for reasons to invite people over and share life together.

Best Advice: Low furniture does wonders for lower ceilings and lighting is everything

Dream Sources: Anything Kelly Wearstler and the 7th floor of Bergdorf Goodman

Thanks, Tiffany and Alan!
