Name: Ryan and Kyle Norville
Location: Bed-Stuy— Brooklyn, New York
Size: 500 square feet
Years lived in: 2 years, renting

Ryan, a florist, and Kyle, a high-school English and poetry teacher, find inspiration for their Bed-Stuy apartment from the places they’ve traveled. French and North African interiors of Airbnbs have influenced their decor, and in some cases they have brought pieces back with them from their travel destinations. The mirror hanging in the living room, for instance, is inspired by France. The rugs and pillows were brought back with them from their honeymoon in Morocco. By visiting flea markets wherever they travel, the couple finds unusual objects to create a warm, romantic, and textural style throughout their home.

“I think everywhere we have traveled has inspired us and we take a little bit back from it,” Ryan admits. “Being in LA where the spaces are a lot bigger makes me want to decorate with a sense of spaciousness and keeping the illusion of very open space is important to me. Spending time with Kyle’s family in Barbados, I come back wanting more plants and a sense of freshness and peace in the house. From Montreal, Oslo, London…there are always small pieces I bring back with me that I try to incorporate in the home.”

Apartment Therapy Survey:

Our Style: Warm, romantic, and textural. I like incorporating vintage furniture that makes the space feel welcoming and lived-in.

Inspiration: A blend of French and North African interiors from Airbnbs we have stayed in.

Favorite Element: Our rugs and pillows we got on our honeymoon in Morocco. They add a lot of character to the living room.

Biggest Challenge: Space and storage. We have a great open living room but both my husband and I love clothes and shoes, so finding places to keep all of our personal belongings and appliances is a constant challenge.

What Friends Say: My friends love our furniture and trying to steal some snuggles with our cat (if they are lucky), we also love to cook so we constantly hear words like “cute” as well as “cozy.”

Biggest Embarrassment: Our floors are super ugly due to the tenant who occupied our apartment before us. There are mismatch tiles and paint splatters everywhere. We have a rental so we don’t know if it’s worth investing in the apartment to re-do the floors.

Proudest DIY: Covering our vintage couch cushions that were very ugly with linen sheets since we couldn’t afford to get the cushions upholstered.

Biggest Indulgence: Our blue couch at the time we purchased it, was way more than we could afford and was the first piece of furniture we had in our living room. I had wanted to slowly buy quality furniture we could keep long-term than to buy a lot of low quality furniture just to fill the house.

Dream Sources: @johnslivingroom (instagram). We follow him at whatever flea market he sells at in Brooklyn. We visit flea markets wherever we travel to around the states and the world to find some really special pieces. I love going to specialty magazine shops and old book stores to find odd and unusual objects.
