When my husband, Jed Rogers, and I started our house hunt four years ago we knew our list of “must haves” was going to be tough to find all in one home. What we ended up finding? A 1964 one-story home with good bones and lots of potential in a desirable neighborhood. It didn’t check all the boxes on our list, but all it needed was some modern conveniences. We weren’t afraid of doing a little renovating and the house had many hints of being a great mid-century find.

The next nine months launched us into a renovation that married necessary upgrades (like energy-efficient windows and updated electrical wiring) with aesthetically classic mid-century features (like slab-front cabinets and a natural stone wall that brings the outside in). We lovingly named our project #RogersRenovation to chronicle the numerous DIY efforts we embarked on to make the house a home. With a hired contractor and help from friends in architecture, carpentry, tile, and landscaping, we were able to check off all of our must-haves and stay close to budget (seriously!).

As a manager of a busy fitness center, I wanted my home to invoke calm at the end of the day. To achieve this, we filled our home with a mix of vintage, DIY, and new pieces sticking to a neutral color palette. The to do list might be never-ending, but we’ve found a little sanctuary for now.

Style: Organic, mid-century modern. I love crisp white and concrete, but love to use plants, leather, and wood for warmth and balance.

Inspiration: Nature, West Texas, Palm Springs, Mid-Century design

Favorite Element: The stone wall in the entry was the first feature we fell in love with. During construction, we had to tear the wall down because the 50-year-old mortar was not stable. We had a moment to consider having a completely open concept space, but that didn’t last.

Biggest Challenge: Rogers Renovation, the never-ending renovation turned DIY obsession since buying this house. We are mostly done with most of the big stuff, but it’s true what they say — you’re never really done.

What Friends Say: “It’s beautiful” and “I want your help with my house!”

Biggest Embarrassment: Plans to build a deck off our front door keep getting delayed and the big pile of wood in our carport is an everyday reminder that it’s not finished.

Proudest DIY: I’m proud of all our DIYs, but the ones that get the most points are assembling and installing one ton of IKEA cabinets, the “kitty” condo, and the super fly birch wood speaker boxes.

Biggest Indulgence: My Citizenry lumbar bed pillow — it’s four feet long and I love it!

Best Advice: “Take time to live in your space before you rush out to fill it.”
