A Dreamy A-Frame Cabin in the Forests of the Pacific Northwest
Name: Ryan and Valerie
Location: Packwood, Washington
Size: 800 square feet
Years lived in: 2.5 years, owned
Our home is a two-bedroom, one-and-a-half-bathroom A-frame cabin just a few miles from Mt. Rainier National Park. We’re surrounded on all sides by old-growth forest, with a deck that backs up to National Forest land. This is a second home for my wife (Val), our dog (Emily), and myself.
What’s the last thing you bought (or found!) for your home? The colorful dhurrie rug, found at the Packwood Flea Market just a few miles from our cabin.
Which fictional character would be most at home in your place? Agent Dale Cooper from Twin Peaks. Our home is saturated in PNW scenery and iconography. Agent Cooper would blend right in.
If you could magically change something about your home, what would it be? More storage would be great. These A-frames weren’t built for long-term living. We’ve added a built-in daybed to accommodate more stuff, and will probably build a few more this year.
What is your favorite room and why? The upstairs loft. We wake up in the morning to breathtaking views of the forest on either side. It feels a little like waking up in a treehouse.
Any advice for creating a home you love? Spend 5-10 minutes to learn your lighting basics, then go change your light bulbs. Lumens and kelvins sound highly technical, but they’re actually really simple concepts to understand and apply, to glorious effect.
Thanks, Ryan and Valerie!
