A Cozy 1980s A-Frame Gets a Clean, Modern Update

My husband and I live in a cozy little A-frame in a wooded neighborhood with our 9-month-old daughter, our labradoodle, and a little tuxedo cat. Our house was built in 1987 and we are the second owners of this home. The original owner built our home himself and used it as a vacation house. Our neighborhood, Ocean Pines, is located only eight minutes from the beach. We love that our little A-frame is a good mix of woodsy and beachy.
I am a wedding and event florist and my husband is a web designer. We, thankfully, have similar tastes when it comes to decorating and furnishing a home and we are so thankful that we snagged this house when it went up for sale five years ago.
My husband loves to skateboard in his free time and there are about 20 skateboards hanging on the walls throughout our home. I have painted a handful of them myself to mark special moments in our lives together: our wedding, the purchase of our home, the birth of our daughter.
What is your favorite room and why? Our living room is my favorite room in the house. The windows give me life! We have six giant windows in our living room that are original to our house and give our home its symmetrical, classic, A-frame characteristics. The knotty pine vaulted ceiling is just over 22-feet tall at its highest point. We painted some of the accent beams white to draw your eye up to the peak of the ceiling. We installed a sleek modern ceiling fan and a pellet stove in this room. It is always nice to cozy up on the sofa next to a warm, crackling fire in the winter. The fireplace hearth was originally red brick that we painted white to make the room feel more open and modern. Colorful furniture makes this mostly white and wood room more fun and playful.
What’s the last thing you bought (or found!) for your home? We purchased a 15-foot piece of milled live-edge wood to incorporate into our kitchen renovation last year. My husband created a breakfast bar between the kitchen and the dining room and used a piece of the wood as the countertop. He also made a coordinating shelf above our kitchen sink out of the wood. We loved the natural look of the milled wood and I somehow lucked out and found an 8-foot dining room table to match at HomeGoods!
Any advice for creating a home you love? Decorate your home in a manner that makes you happy! Our family is quite minimalistic and we love bright, open spaces. Some people questioned us when we said we were painting the entire interior of our home bright white. I love the cleanliness of the white walls. The clean interior lent itself to adding colorful furniture, linens, and accent pieces.
Thanks, Ami!
