Tell us a little (or a lot) about your home and the people who live there: We are a family of four. Our two children are ages 4 and 6. We reside in Los Angeles and were eager to have an escape from the city for our kids to experience the mountains.
In 2021, during the pandemic, we found the perfect project for our vacation home. We bought a fixer A-frame cabin in Lake Arrowhead, California. It had not been updated in nearly 40 years. We did a lot of the work ourselves. We aimed to add modern touches to the home by completely renovating the kitchen and bathrooms while staying true to the mid-century roots.
My husband and I are both artists. I studied painting at MICA and my husband works in visual effects. We wanted the cabin to be a bright and modern escape from the city. I usually gravitate to a more maximalist style, but we designed this home with a minimalist and contemporary palette.
Describe your home’s style in 5 words or fewer: 1965, modern, A-frame, mountain retreat
What is your favorite room and why? The main room of the cabin is definitely my favorite. It has the amazing A-frame ceiling and a wall of glass that allows light to pour in. The house is surrounded by a grove of pine, cedar, and redwood trees that frame the living room view. One of things that we first fell in love with is the living room fireplace; it is made entirely of petrified wood.
What’s the last thing you bought (or found!) for your home? The last thing we purchased was a Barcelona-style daybed for the main room. We wanted a place for resting in front of the fire and looking out onto the trees.
Any advice for creating a home you love? Choose colors and pieces that can allow a calm in your day. I find that having a simplified space without clutter allows my imagination to thrive.
