A Fun Philadelphia Loft Inspired by Plants… and Beer

You know how you’re always reading that you should just add things you love to your home’s decor, and it’ll all work out? This rental apartment in Philadelphia is proof. Filled with beer and UK-themed elements plus a mix of vintage finds, this is a home that perfectly reflects its occupants’ personalities.

Tell us a little (or a lot) about your home and the people who live there: A world filled with plants, forgotten items with new purpose, and a scruffy little dog.

Expect a lot of beer themed decor and creativity. My partner, Joseph, is a homebrewer, so this holds a special place in our home. We channel this theme throughout our space, from bottles and growlers, to art and beer can planters; we even have a “Brewery Room,” with art, homebrewing equipment, and of course, a tap pouring the seasonal loft beer, and our current local brew.

If you could magically change something about your home, what would it be? I’m a renter, and a big thing I’m constantly wishing to change is the tile. I love the look of beautiful tile but not the opportunity to incorporate it. Also my cabinetry isn’t a color I’d prefer, but don’t have the opportunity to alter it.

What is your favorite room and why? The living room. Our space is open concept, so a big section of our space is this area. We have high ceilings so we work that into our decor, using it to our advantage. There are shelves everywhere, plants draping from them. Bottles, cans, and growlers adorn the higher levels of our home. String lights wrapped around exposed HVAC, a gallery wall, a huge pallet turned wall shelf that is draped with photos, ivy, and flags.

I like to sprinkle in found items and treasures, adapting them to my space, whether that’s art or making a side table out of a briefcase, or using a fun piece of wood as a shelf, and incorporate one-off pieces, and limited-run prints from independent artists locally and from places I’ve traveled.

Another huge theme you’ll find in our home is UK-themed decor, from the Union Jack making an abundance of appearances to a mini telephone booth. It’s pretty apparent we have a soft spot for England.

Any advice for creating a home you love? Go big or don’t go home. If you don’t make it your own, you won’t feel comfortable. Have it reflect your personality. Also switch it up, keep things fresh.
