A Joshua Tree Home Built to Blend With the Desert
Name: Oded
Location: Yucca Valley/Joshua Tree, California
The basics: 2 years, owned — 1,375 square feet
Oded’s home is an open and functional space with the sort of desert vibes that are distinctly California. Designed with the landscape in mind, the desert light floods the house and the outdoor space has views to die for.
Tell us a little (or a lot) about your home and the people who live there: We completed our home in December of 2015. We built it from the ground up, with the intention of it being as functional as possible, yet simple. The idea was to integrate our home with the desert and allow it to be a part of it and essentially, our lives.
What is your favorite room and why? The open floor plan kitchen/living room. Our passions are hosting and cooking. We LOVE to host and have people over and while most of our time is spent in the kitchen, it allows us to always communicate with all of our guests while we’re all in the same space.
If you could magically change something about your home, what would it be? A pool! We would replace the Jacuzzi with a pool (and a built- in jacuzzi). We really want one and think it will be an amazing add-on to the house.
What’s the last thing you bought (or found!) for your home? We just finished a new beautiful modern deck two weeks ago and completed the upholstery for our new custom-made outdoor lounging couch.
Which fictional character would be most at home in your place? Frank Zappa. Don’t know why, but I think that he would appreciate the details inside and enjoy the wildness outside!
Oded’s words of wisdom: Be functional! Beauty is one thing, but we wanted our space to be functional first. We planned the space and its purpose and only after that was all set did we take care of the beauty.
Thanks, Oded!
