Location: Silver Lake — Los Angeles, California
When we saw this house, it was love at first sight. The lofted ceilings, leaded glass windows and striking dark wood floors knocked our socks off. Not to mention it had room for our little one who was on the way. My husband is an animation director and I’m an art director/interior designer, so having an inspiring place to live and work was extremely important, as well as having a walkable neighborhood. This little house in Silver Lake really fit the bill, just two blocks from the reservoir, two blocks from the grocery store and across the street from our favorite wine shop.
The main room does a lot of heavy lifting, serving as three rooms in one - kitchen, living and dining room. In order to serve these three functions, furniture layout was key. And with our new baby, this room now also functions as a playroom, so I had quite a bit of tidying to do before shooting these (realities of being a mom who works from home).
The office is where my husband and I work and stores the bulk of our books. We were able to fit an IKEA table top in perfectly, using two sets of drawers as the base. The bench was existing, and serves as a great place to sit and sketch, read or play guitar.
Off the hallway is out son Arlo's nursery. We wanted something bright and cheerful that felt youthful and boyish. The nightstand and dresser were customized with wood knobs, to tie together the wood tones in the room.
At the end of the hall is the master bedroom and it is quite easily our favorite room in the house. The vaulted ceiling complements our four poster bed perfectly, and I love the rustic chic vibe it creates. This is the first house we've lived in that had room for a dresser, but being on a budget we opted for a classic IKEA Hemnes dresser and dressed it up with custom leather pulls.
The artwork in our home consists of some family heirlooms, pieces we picked up on our travels and at flea markets, as well as some of our own artwork.
