My husband is an architect and designed our house from the ground up. It’s new construction, located in Pittsburgh, in the north side neighborhood of Deutschtown. Deutschtown is a city neighborhood with mostly row homes and this is our own modern interpretation of a classic north side row home.

We love the neighborhood and lived here for about five years before building from scratch. Our style is kind of a mix of Scandinavian and mid century modern. We love clean lines and lots of light, with pops of color. Our friends tell us it’s modern but comfortable too. The house was designed to allow for lots of light, with huge windows at the front and the back of the home, windows on the one open side, and a skylight that fills a stairwell from the roof to the ground floor.

Some things I really love about our home – it perfectly reflects how we live. There’s a place for all things, from our mudroom, to even our dog’s crate (designed into the base of our coat closet/armoire in the mud room). My husband designed a light fixture that hangs below the skylight on the third floor, which is amazing. Although I was terrified at first, we decided to paint a few of our interior doors yellow; this now one of my favorite features. We also designed all of our built ins, which cover one entire side of the lower level from front to back (minus where the kitchen is). We also have a third level covered deck with a spectacular view of Downtown Pittsburgh – it’s probably one of my favorite places in the house.

I’ve included a few pictures, but they don’t do it justice. It was on our neighborhood house tour before it was fully completed and everyone who came through raved about it. We’ve been living here since September and I feel like I’m on vacation every day!

Thanks, Rachel & Eric!
