Name: Vincent
Location: West Village — New York, New York
The basics: 2 years, rented — 700 square feet

Vincent’s West Village home is classically urban and warmly welcoming, perfect for his supper club, Mr. Jones. His home is both personal and public, well curated with plenty to look at without feeling staged. And with the exposed brick and natural light, he hit the apartment jackpot!

Tell us a little (or a lot) about your home and the people who live there: I live in a brownstone building in the West Village of New York City. It’s on a little quiet street away from the hustle and bustle of Bleecker Street. I arrived in New York about two years ago from Australia and immediately fell in love with the West Village and had this ideal apartment in my mind that consisted of high ceilings, open plan, brick walls, plenty of light, and a large kitchen. Unsurprisingly, it took me nearly two months to find a place remotely close to that! I loved hosting people for dinner back in Melbourne and decided to take this passion further in New York so I opened a supper club that hosts dining guests twice a month from my apartment. I wanted my place to feel warm and welcoming, somewhere where guests can forget the outside world and engage with the here and now.

What is your favorite room and why? I’d have to say it’s the living/dining room. That’s where a lot of my fondest memories were created through hours of conversations with friends and family over good food and, of course, wine! I know of no better place in a home that has the power to bring people together. I think it’s really the people that you meet that define the city that you live in and for me that’s 100% true, and I feel so fortunate to have met and really gotten to know individuals here.

If you could magically change something about your home, what would it be? I would knock down the built-in wardrobes separating the kitchen from the living/dining room to create a more open space and better flow from the kitchen to the table. I believe they’re so dependent on each other that it would be such a shame to keep them apart. As for where I would store all my stuff after that, well, that’s a problem for tomorrow!

What’s the last thing you bought (or found!) for your home? I recently bought these two stools for the kitchen bench. I love the understated complexity of the design and also how it’s taken your contours into account!

Which fictional character would be most at home in your place? While not fictional, I would like to hope that Gertrude Stein would find my place suitable to host a Saturday salon!

Vincent’s words of wisdom: Check out lots of designs and figure out what speaks to you the most, and then hone in on specific details that really appeals to you.

Thanks, Vincent!
