When you think about toy storage, what comes to mind? Bright primary colors and lots of plastic are usually the default, but if that’s not your style, it doesn’t mean you’re limited to storage solutions that don’t fit in with the rest of your decor. There are plenty of stylish toy storage options out there that you can buy or DIY to keep your kids’ toys in check without changing your entire aesthetic.

Below, some smart ideas to get you inspired, whether you’re ready to build something custom or buy something ready-to-use.

Upgrade the Usual Cube Storage

Put a creative spin on the typical cube storage by keeping everything neutral and adding legs with a pop of color, like in this project from Shelterness, and what would normally make for a bland bookshelf is suddenly transformed into a stylish storage bench.

Use Leaning Bookcases with Storage Boxes

Leaning bookcases that have built-in storage boxes offer the perfect combination of hiding away toys and putting other items (like books, figurines and favorite stuffed animals) on display, as pictured above on Land of Nod.

Build a Simpler, Sleeker Toy Chest

On the outside, this DIY toy chest from Homedit is totally sleek and simple in a muted color, but the inside has a pop of pink that’s still fun and perfect for a kid’s room. It’s stylish enough that it won’t take away from the rest of your decor, and it’ll hold everything you need to stow away.

Stash Stuffed Animals in Decorative Baskets

For softer toys like stuffed animals, decorative baskets like the ones above from Munchkin & Bear are an easy and still aesthetically-pleasing solution. They’re simple, soft and fun (the pom poms are a cute added touch) for a kid’s room without being obnoxious, and they’ll hold toys (and even extra linens) with ease.

Repurpose Crates for Rustic Storage

Cozy.Cottage.Cute. cleverly repurposed these antique dynamite crates into rustic toy storage boxes by stripping them and adding casters to the bottom—a fun look, and a totally functional storage solution for keeping toys off the floor and organized.

DIY Your Own Window Seat Storage Bench

If you have the space for a window seat, try turning IKEA shelves into storage benches like Nuestra Vida Dulce did here—it makes for tons of extra seating without taking up too much space, and underneath there’s a plethora of storage cubes just waiting to be filled with toys and other kid stuff.

Use a Fun, Locker-Like Storage Cabinet

Here’s an example of primary color usage that looks fun and can easily transition from kid’s room to grown up—this storage cabinet from IKEA (as seen on Interiors by Sarah Langtry) is locker-inspired and makes a great place to tuck away toys.

Use Large, Patterned Storage Bins

If smaller storage cubes just aren’t enough to contain all of your kids’ toys, try using larger storage bins with fun but subtle patterns, like the example above from Little Green Notebook. There’s plenty of space to store toys, and they still look stylish in bigger cubbies.
