Fans of textile, furniture, and accessories company Aelfie are familiar with the brand’s stylish offerings—quirky graphics, loud colors, patterns that complement (and sometimes even clash, in a good way). Aelfie the person (and the home goods company’s founder) is similarly bold and awesome; she’s called a few different countries home and has a background in both fashion and music. The home she and her husband purchased a year ago is this bright and airy Brooklyn apartment, where both Aelfie’s personality (the person) and Aelfie’s style (the company) are on the display.
Pops of neon, a checkered rug in the bedroom, and an “intestine-shaped” sofa all live in harmony here. She displays one of her daughter’s first drawings in her office, citing it as developmentally significant. She also keeps a vocoder in her bedroom—a peek into a her life as a musician.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
Our Style: Optimistic and eclectic, maybe a bit eccentric.
Inspiration: I’m inspired by the usual suspects like contemporary art and design, fashion, Pinterest, and travel. Some of the less usual suspects are memes, dog shows, targeted internet ads, and anime. I also love food packaging and display. I’ve been thinking a lot about supermarkets lately, and merchandising more generally.
Favorite Element: The vintage intestines-shaped sofa by Preview (a now defunct brand) that I purchased from Again & Again in Dallas, Texas.
Biggest Challenge: Window treatments. I was really excited to design custom textiles for our space, but that dream was quickly squashed when I discovered the cost of creating drapery. Not cheap, my friends!
There are over a dozen windows in the apartment. I bit the bullet and installed tasteful but bland roller shades in the two bedrooms and left the rest bare (aside from installing child guards).
What Friends Say: “When are you out of town so I can stay here and cat sit?”
Biggest Embarrassment: I custom designed a shag carpet for our living room and it didn’t work at all. Thankfully, it is perfect in the bedroom.
Proudest DIY: My kid.
Biggest Indulgence: Unfortunately, the bland shades mentioned above.
Best Advice: My best and only interior design advice is to shop small or vintage and support companies that aren’t run by monsters.
Dream Sources: Anything designed by India Madhavi or Olivier Mourgue, Pieces by Aesthetic Pursuit, mirrors by Bower Studios, vintage by 1st Dibs, and lighting by Rosie Li.
