Alison’s “Eclectic and a Little Rough Around the Edges” Home

My cozy 49 square meter/ 527 square feet apartment is above a shop on one of the busiest roads in Redfern. I bought the unit in 2012, it was going cheap as the previous owners had done bad makeshift renovations, painted it an awful blue and managed to have about 6 people living in it.

The first thing I did after painting the entire place, was have a friend build the huge floor to ceiling, wall to wall bookshelf which instantly gave the house some character. It wasn’t until later in 2012 when renovating the kitchen and bathroom did we discover, under four layers of floor, the original floor boards.

I love how much character my home has, nothing is perfect, the walls bend, the floor slopes and there aren’t many proper windows, but this house is completely me. I wouldn’t have been able to live in a brand new unit with stark walls and perfect right angles, I need something eclectic and a little rough around the edges, a little like me!

My home also acts as my workplace, having turned my spare bedroom into my studio/workshop where I run my jewelry business, Alison de Thélème. Which has both pros and cons, it means I can work anytime that I feel inspiration but it also means I have plenty of distractions that assist in procrastinating!
