Amazon Is Raising Its Prime Membership Prices

Bad news, Prime subscribers: Amazon’s membership fees are about to get more expensive.

The online retail giant announced Thursday that its annual fee will increase from $99 to $119, according to Deadline. While the company recently raised the price of a monthly membership back in January from $10.99 to $12.99, the last annual fee hike dates back to 2014, when it went from $79 to the current $99.

Since that 2014 increase, there have been many new options when it comes to Prime member services, like expanded streaming video. In a statement from Amazon about the January price change, a spokesperson told Recode:

The number of items eligible for unlimited Free Two-Day Shipping increased in recent years from 20 million to more than 100 million items. We have expanded Prime Free Same-Day and Prime Free One-Day delivery to more than 8,000 cities and towns. We also continue to introduce new, popular and award-winning Prime Originals…Members also enjoy a growing list of unique benefits like Prime Music, Prime Reading, exclusive products and much more.

While there are plenty of benefits of membership, there will most likely be a group of folks for whom the $119 isn’t worth it.

The price increase takes effect on May 11, or subscribers’ next renewal date thereafter.
