I’ve tested quite a few pillows while working at Apartment Therapy, and it made me realize that my pillow preference keeps changing. For many years, I was all about firm pillows but more recently I’ve come to love something more soft and squishy. One thing that hasn’t changed? My dislike of memory foam pillows. I’ve always found them to be extremely uncomfortable and, despite many of their claims, not at all breathable or cooling. So when Amerisleep offered to let me try their Dual Comfort Pillow, an innovative foam pillow that features a firm side AND a soft side, I thought, why not? Prove me wrong, Amerisleep! And you know something? They did.

Quick Overview

A Quick Look at the Amerisleep Dual Comfort Pillow

  • One side offers gentle, firm support, the other is soft and cushioning
  • Perfect for side, back, and combo sleepers
  • Uses Amerisleep’s Bio-Pur material, which is more breathable and responsive than traditional memory foam
  • Features cooling channels that let warm air escape for a comfortable sleep
  • Tapered pillow edges provide better support for the neck and shoulders
  • Lightweight, removable cover
  • Comes in Standard/Queen and King sizes
  • Available in Low Loft (5″) and Mid Loft (6″) heights

Design Features That Stand Out

For starters, the Amerisleep Dual Comfort Pillow is not a traditional memory foam pillow. It’s made from the brand’s pressure-relieving Bio-Pur foam material, which is more breathable and responsive than memory foam, plus it stays cool while you sleep. Because the pillow features a soft and firm side, you decide the level of support you need based on your preferred sleep position. Side sleepers will want to opt for the firm side, which helps to support the neck and keep it straight; the cushioned soft side provides the exact same support for back sleepers. The pillow’s cooling channels help warm air to escape so you don’t overheat during the night, while the tapered edges allow the pillow to adapt to different sleep positions and perfectly support the neck and shoulders.

How It Performed

When the Amerisleep Duo Comfort Pillow arrived (I chose the Mid Loft version), I was dubious. It looked no different from other memory foam pillows I’ve tried, and I was certain that I’d have a few rough nights of sleep on it before abandoning it entirely and dropping it in my building’s donations bin. But to my surprise, I slept great that first night and for every night thereafter. While this is not a squishy, cuddly pillow that you can hug, the soft side is cushiony and comfortable. (Because I’m a combo sleeper, this is the side I mostly used.) I also never felt hot sleeping with the Amerisleep Duo Comfort Pillow, which is not something I can say about other memory foam pillows, which I’d often fling off the bed and swap out for a cooler, down-alternative model.

What I Loved

  • The pillow didn’t make me overheat: I know I just mentioned this, but it bears repeating. The pillow really is breathable, and my face and neck never felt warm while sleeping on it.
  • Those tapered edges: Other memory foam pillows I’ve tried frequently gave me neck pain because of how thick the edges were, and they didn’t adapt well to my different sleep positions. Not so with the Amerisleep Dual Comfort Pillow. Though I tested the Mid Loft version, the edges weren’t too thick, and I didn’t feel like my head was resting on a block. I was able to cradle the pillow a bit when I was sleeping on my side, which was nice. Again, something I couldn’t do with traditional memory foam pillows.

Good to Know

The Amerisleep Dual Comfort Pillow is final sale and does not qualify for the brand’s 100-night sleep trial, so there are no exchanges or returns allowed. However, it does come with a 10-year warranty.

Should You Buy the Amerisleep Dual Comfort Pillow?
