Balenciaga Is Selling a $1,790 Trash Bag
It’s said that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. But thanks to Balenciaga, even the trash bag itself could now be considered treasure.
The luxury fashion house is selling a garbage bag, called the Trash Pouch, that not only belongs in the dumpster, but also on the runway. The drawstring bag is made of calfskin leather, is emblazoned with the Balenciaga logo (though you could hardly see it), and has a coating that gives it that shiny plastic aesthetic. It comes in four colorways: black, blue and black, white and red, and yellow and black.
And since this is Balenciaga we’re talking about, the price tag is expectedly not cheap: $1,790.
When asked why he introduced such a product, Balenciaga creative director Demna Gvasalia said to Women‘s Wear Daily: “I couldn’t miss an opportunity to make the most expensive trash bag in the world, because who doesn’t love a fashion scandal?”
And that he did. The trash bag first caught attention after it debuted in the Winter 2022 collection in Paris last March. It then made more headlines after Kim Kardashian received one as a gift and posted about it in an Instagram story.
Soon, the rest of the internet chimed in. “They really trying to make a joke out of the consumers at this point,” one commenter said wrote, while another added: “I think designer fashion is a morbid social experiment.”
In 2017, the brand also caused quite a stir after it unveiled a $2,145 blue leather bag that suspiciously resembled IKEA’s 99-cent FRAKTA tote.
The Balenciaga Trash Pouch is now available in stores and online.
