Barack Obama Used To Live In This Park Slope Brownstone For Sale

The president was here. The Brooklyn brownstone that, thirty or so years ago, was home to 44 is now on the market for $4.295 million.

In the mid ’80s, post-Columbia (and pre-Michelle) Barack Obama lived at 640 2nd Street in Brooklyn’s Park Slope. At the time, the property was split into multiple apartments—Obama and his then-girlfriend lived on the top floor.

The Real Deal notes that in Barack Obama: The Story, author David Maraniss said the property was owned by an employee of the Brooklyn Friends School in Park Slope, where his girlfriend worked as an assistant teacher.

The brownstone, just off Prospect Park, dates back to 1903, and was converted back into a single family in 1994 by the current owners. The restoration of the 3,860 square foot space is lovely, and it retains much of its original charm and detail: The double parlor has an original china cabinet and stained glass windows, and there is beautifully carved wood wainscoting in many rooms. The third floor even boasts a little inglenook.

The three-story house (plus a garden level and a basement) has five bedrooms, three bathrooms, and four fireplaces. The private garden is south-facing and accessible from both the garden and parlor levels, and includes “unique plantings, a vine covered arbor, and bluestone pavers.” There’s even outdoor storage under the stairs.

According to the listing on Brown Harris Stevens, there are open houses this weekend and next week.

As for Obama, he moved just slightly up the property ladder. The former First Family’s new DC digs aren’t bad, either.
