She’s an interior designer. He, a technical architect. And together, Creative and Projects Directors Meritxell and Josep mix their work and private lives by using their beautiful Barcelona home as both a living space, workspace and showroom for their business, The Room Studio. The couple found this 5,382-square-foot (total) space that was already divided into two zones by a big hall at the entrance, a setup perfect for using as both an office and a home.

When they first looked at this space, it was in bad shape; the architectural soul had been lost. So, to bring back its life, they restored classical details into the design, combining them with modern elements that bring both comfort and charm to the home. This creative couple reflects their design passions in every corner of this amazing space… and it’s a place where clients can see what they do and buy whatever furniture they like in it.

Apartment Therapy Survey:

Our Style: Mixing things with style. It’s not easy to combine things from different periods and styles. They have to have balance and coherence and this is what we try to do.

Inspiration: For us it’s hard to see just see a flower and then get inspired… You have to observe and keep the information, then somehow this unconsciously comes out as a great idea!

Favorite Element: The Ingo Maurer ceiling lamp… This one is not for sale!

Biggest Challenge: Everything we don’t see! Like electrical installations that go under the floors.

What Friends Say: They never want to leave!

Biggest Embarrassment: The street noise. We maintained the old windows of the apartment so sometimes it’s hard to sleep. But you get used to it at some point!

Proudest DIY: Our kid’s paints.

Biggest Indulgence: The TV screen of the living room. It such an investment! But we want to show people how amazing it is to have this kind of thing in their homes.

Best Advice: Hire an interior designer! And the most important thing: Trust him or her!

Dream Sources: Fairs, antique dealers, and architects such as Pawson or Toyo Ito
