Summer might’ve just ended, but the holiday season is already around the corner. For some families, that means more time in the kitchen cooking for guests — and, therefore, more stains and water spillage. If you have a small rug or runner in your kitchen, you may already be considering moving it elsewhere. But that shouldn’t mean you have to lose that plushness underneath your feet. Just follow artist and designer Jude Morgan’s lead.

Why You Should Use a Bath Mat in Your Kitchen

When Jude moved into her maximalist Los Angeles home, she said she wasn’t much of a cook. But over the three years she’s lived there, she now cooks every day. It’s a galley-style kitchen, with appliances and countertops on either side of the narrow room, so she’s constantly moving ingredients or pots from one side to the other (which increases the risk of spills).

“I had a different rug in here before, but I felt like it kept on moving and sliding around and also wasn’t super-friendly to all the moisture that inevitably got on it,” Jude said during the House Tour. “So, this is actually a bath mat, but it’s perfect because it has the rubber bottom so it doesn’t slide around, and if it ever gets dirty from food or water from washing the dishes, I can just go pop it in the wash and bring it back out here.”

Considering an Unexpected Alternative Expands Your Options

Obviously there are gorgeous rugs and runners to browse, but widening your search to include bath mats adds a new dimension to the styles you can choose from. Jude chose a tiger-shaped bath mat because her grandmother loved them, and now every time she looks at it, it reminds her of her.

If you love the look of Jude’s bath mat, Urban Outfitters has a similar (if not exact) option that could work in a kitchen. It’s made of cotton, comes in three colors, and is machine-washable. Sometimes the best solution is hiding in a category you wouldn’t normally consider. Visit Jude’s House Tour to see more of her wonderful home ideas.
