This 1998 Bedroom Got a $2,500 Makeover with the Most Stunning Wallpaper
If you’re looking to make a wall — or all of the walls — in a room less boring, take a piece of advice from DIYer and content creator Ashley Basnight (@SmashingDIY): Combine texture and pattern and color on the wall. This is “why [she] went with both paneling and wallpaper together” in her latest bedroom makeover project.
The bedroom is located in Ashley’s 1998 lakehouse, which she moved into in 2022 and has been transforming room by room since then. “It needed a little bit of love,” Ashley says. “With this being my guest bedroom, I wanted the room to feel like a weekend getaway when my guests come to stay.”
Ashley says the biggest steps in transforming the space were changing the old carpet to a plush carpet, re-painting the walls, adding wall paneling and wallpaper, and then adding decor, of course.
Skim-coating the walls was the hardest step.
Because the walls had an “orange-peel texture” before, as Ashley describes, they needed a bit of extra elbow grease to become the modern, easy-to-paint texture that’s there today.
They had to be skim-coated, and then they were painted in a warm tan (Behr’s Mushroom Bisque). The ceilings are a creamy white (Behr’s Swiss Coffee).
The accent wall has custom-designed wallpaper.
The accent wall is where Ashley chose to go bold with her texture-pattern-color trio, and the wallpaper is actually designed by Ashley herself, from her new collection with Chasing Paper. (This is the Tropicka pattern in magenta!)
Ashley then added sound-proofing slatted panels from LuxeWall on both sides of the wallpaper accent wall — both pretty and practical.
“Adding texture is a great way to bring dimension and excitement to the room,” Ashley adds.
Furniture finishes the bedroom.
Ashley finished the guest bedroom with a canopy bed, new bedding, a glam globe lamp, arched nightstands, a white bench, artwork, and a neutral checkered rug — all of which add even more texture and pattern to the room.
In total, the room redo cost about $2,500, Ashley estimates. “I don’t think I would have done anything differently,” she says. “It came out just as I envisioned … I love how all of the different elements come together to create that serene vibe. Now when I walk in this room, I feel so calm.”
And her guests love the space, too. “They have all claimed that room as their own,” she says. One Instagram commenter says: “I’m on my way!!! Breakfast is included in the amenities, yes???”
