A Trendy Paint Decision Made This 152-Year-Old Bedroom So Much Cozier
Decorating a shared bedroom might seem like a daunting task. How do you create a space where both personalities are represented while looking cohesive and having a good design flow? However, photographer and mom Katie DeGroot has mastered this in her sons Langston and Theodore’s bedroom in their 152-year-old Gothic home in Stillwater, Minnesota.
Initially, the room was painted in minty green, with white trim and woodwork. However, Katie wanted to make the room feel cozier, so this past spring she color-drenched the room in Sherwin Williams’s “Dutch Tile Blue,” meaning she painted the walls and all the woodwork the same color.
“I just think shared sibling spaces can be so cute and charming. I was inspired by what I noticed other moms doing,” Katie explains. “I love the look of wooden furniture mixed with color-drenched walls, often rooms I’ve seen in Scandinavian-inspired homes. I wanted to create something similar.”
The result? So cozy and charming.
The wood furniture (mostly secondhand) in this space doesn’t make the space feel cramped. “I always try to use thrift stores or Facebook Marketplace,” Katie says. Most recently, Katie removed the crib and replaced it with a vintage pie cabinet she refinished.
The room is big enough that the boys have ample room to sprawl out and play or have quiet time in their individual spaces. However, the family usually hangs out together. “We are a cozy family that loves being at home! We spend time getting ready for the day, of course, doing bedtime routines, and then during the day, if we aren’t outdoors, we often play in these spaces,” Katie shares. “I love reading books to my children, setting up invitations to play, and rotating their toys to keep things exciting!”
