This Whimsical Bedroom Makeover Mixes and Matches 6 (Maybe More!) Colorful Patterns
Mixing several patterns in one room is a feat, and when we heard that this room had six (maybe even more!) colorful patterns, we knew we had to see how Morgan and Faye Hurley (of this colorful colonial home) pulled it off in their daughter, Olive’s, bedroom.
Fay describes the room “pretty plain” with “not much going on,” when the family first moved in. “We made do with the beds and furniture we had until it was time to redo them.”
Faye explains that both she and Olive wanted a “vintage eclectic feel” for the new bedroom, and luckily, Spoonflower was willing to help fill the room with a gorgeous blend of patterns.
The brand gifted the bird-filled wallpaper, teal checkered bedding, green striped curtains, and diagonally striped curtains. All of these patterns work together to create a cohesive, vibrant room. Olive was involved in picking out the patterns, too.
“The girls love when I bring out the fabric and wallpaper samples and were a huge help in looking through all of the patterns and helping me narrow them down,” Faye explains of her three daughters. “They also had a lot of influence on their custom beds, the little girls were obsessed with the idea of a bunk, and we enjoyed gathering ideas together for built in custom beds for all of them.”
Since Faye and Morgan took on most of the DIY projects in their home, it’s no surprise that they designed and built the bed in Olive’s bedroom. The bed looks like a cozy nook (which can be made even more relaxed by closing the curtains) with a built-in shelf that’s lined with the room’s wallpaper. We love the wavy details!
The bed, trim, and doors are painted in Magnolia Home’s Americana Egg.
Olive and her two sisters have a playroom, so Faye admits that their bedrooms are spaces to focus on the quieter parts of life, like reading, which happens to be one of Olive’s favorite things to do. “I’m totally in love with her custom bed, and she agrees, but her favorite spot is the cozy corner where we put her shelves and chair,” Faye shares. “She spends a lot of time reading there and snuggling with her kitties.”
The bedroom proves that an amalgamation of vibrant patterns and colors doesn’t mean a room will feel overwhelming. It’s quite the opposite — it’s super cozy. To see more of their relaxing house, visit the full home tour on Apartment Therapy.
