When it comes to outdoor space in the city, you often take what you can get. That was Julia & Bruno’s thinking when they purchased their Montreal home and inherited this dumpy backyard. If you remember their House Tour from last year, you’ve already seen part of the colorful transformation!

From Julia:
Last summer, one year after we moved in, we started our backyard’s transformation. When we bought our duplex in Villeray, Montréal, we didn’t care if the backyard was a dump, we were just happy to have a backyard. We did all the work ourselves with a small budget of about $3000. The main problem with the backyard was the old and dangerous shed. The first thing we did was to demolish it. Then, we moved our staircase on the left to make more room. We painted the staircase yellow and the brick gray. We built a deck and renovated the second floor balcony. At the last minute, we decided to build a small shed under the staircase. After all this work, it was time to add some green! We planted grass and added some perennial plants. Our backyard doesn’t have much sun, so we use it more at night to BBQ.
