Before & After: A Modern DIY Fire Pit
With a small budget and a lot of will power, Tanya turned her crumbling fire pit into a super modern lakeside hangout spot.
From Tanya: The fire pit that came with my Lake Superior house was slowly crumbling and wasn’t much fun to sit around (I absolutely hate putting chairs on the grass because, living in the country, I’m petrified of ticks). I dismantled the old fire pit but didn’t have a huge budget to replace it – plus the soft, lumpy lawn, on a hill to boot – made anything like lockstone or patio stones impossible. Instead, my Handy Hubby and I hauled 5,200+ pounds of gravel ourselves and made what I jokingly refer to as my adult sandbox.
While I did most of the shoveling and leveling, Hubby welded a simple square fire pit – it’s a great beginner’s welding project! It turned out so beautifully, we’re both so thrilled! It blocks the wind from the lake so our fire is protected and because I painted the metal copper, it really glows when lit.
I’d love to add a cluster of Adirondack chairs at some point, but for now I blew the rest of our small budget on a bag of marshmallows.
