We purchased our townhouse about 4 years ago. We wanted to purchase a home that needed a kitchen remodel because we didn’t like what we saw when we toured houses with remodeled kitchens.

Also, we wanted to get used to our place before we embarked on a remodel so we knew what we wanted as far as layout, finishes, and appliances. We were glad we waited because we made many decisions that were different from our initial thoughts on what we wanted.

It took us a while to find someone who knew what we wanted (contemporary with a nod to an Eichler-esque kitchen since our townhouse had some similar elements to Eichler homes in our town).

We also didn’t want to do a generic remodel so we spent a lot of time looking for a lighting, tile, and surfaces. The tile we chose was 100% upcycled material from old CRT screens. We thought that was perfect because we live in Silicon Valley.

It was funny because our tile contractor didn’t want to install the tile because it was handmade and each tile was slightly different. Afterward, he was quite proud of the job and asked if he could come back to photograph it.

We love the waterfall effect on our island. It really brings the whole design together. In addition, it ties the kitchen into the rest of the second floor because there is a lot of wood.

It took a lot longer to finish because we were quite particular with the fit and finish and had the contractor come back to finish some of the tile and electrical work. Now, after six months, we are thrilled with the results and use the kitchen more than ever. We even had a dinner party! It was funny because we had a porch with chairs set up but couldn’t get people out of the kitchen even though it was beautiful outside. It’s a great place to entertain.

Thank you Jennifer!
