I am sharing our almost-completely DIY, super budget $7K kitchen remodel, which we started in September, and finally wrapped up just a couple weeks ago.

The process was a lesson in patience, as we hated the kitchen upon buying our house, but waited about two and a half years before we had created a plan, emotionally recovered from the bathroom remodel (which was shared here a while back!), and saved up enough dollars.

We gutted the thing pretty completely, and my husband, Ruben, spent long nights and weekends battling the 1952 wiring, lathe and plaster over chickenwire, and general craziness that an old house entails. The biggest change we made was to open up a pass-through between kitchen and living room. When we finally had a blank slate, we went the IKEA route, because I really do like their cabinets and generally hear really good things about them. However, I really didn’t want our kitchen to look like just another IKEA kitchen. So we tried to get creative, with the most personal element being the tiles that we found and carted home from a vacation to Mexico.

House projects are such an adventure, but oh so worthwhile, because the end product is something personal, special, and full of memories!
