My daughter lives in an off campus college house with three other girls. From the first time I saw this space, I wanted to give it a makeover! It had good bones, but was SO dark and dreary. It had dark paneled walls, and brown carpeting. To further add to the darkness, the girls were given black leather sofas and they hung dark green curtains.
The girls and the owner of the house gave me full permission to make this space over. I started with painting the paneled walls white. That made a huge difference in itself! Next I filled the fireplace (that the girls had no intention on ever using) with books. Both as a design feature and to keep out their adopted cat that kept getting into it. I styled the shelves using mostly items from my own house, including a few old, inexpensive vases that I painted gold to match the existing mirror.
Lastly, I rearranged the furniture into a much more pleasing layout. I purchased a rug and curtains from IKEA, and a few inexpensive throw pillow covers from H&M. The difference is dramatic! The girls will be in this house for the remainder of this school year as well as next, so I believe this was money well spent.
