This heavy kitchen hutch was no doubt functional — with drawers and doors it’s got plenty of storage. But its dark color, outdated look and heavy feel wouldn’t make it welcome in any kitchen, let alone a bright one. That’s why Elise made some changes, and this hutch has been converted to a handy modern kitchen island.

From Elise:

We re-purposed the base of this kitchen hutch to serve as an island for a kitchen. We removed the existing top and built a custom wood top so two stools would fit under. We also customized the inside, and built slider drawers which pull out for convenience. The doors were customized to match the kitchen cabinets. I painted the top to simulate a soft metal grey using three to four different colors, and sprayed it for extra protection. We also removed the bottom legs and installed large industrial wheels that lock.
