Christina’s TV cabinet wasn’t looking so hot anymore. Ten years old, she had tried to sell it on Craigslist twice, without even one bite. She had even considered dragging it to the curb to give away for free, but it was too heavy to move! Christina felt stuck with a piece of furniture she didn’t love anymore. Until she had an idea to totally transform it into something completely new.

From Christina:

While sketching out some ideas for a bench I wanted to create I realized the tv armoire would make a great bench, with some cutting involved. I cut the top section off and was left with a 15 inch high bench. With a three inch foam cushion I had the perfect height for my kitchen table.

I then filled the holes, sanded, primed and painted the new bench a glossy white. This matched my kitchen cabinets and would add to the built-in look. Hardware which matched my cabinets was added as well. I built a four foot high back for comfortable seating and then upholstered it with foam and a tablecloth. The back was attached to the bench and then mounted to the wall using a cleat. The no sew foam cushion was created using MDF board and my trusty staple gun. This was attached to the bench as well.

The storage drawers underneath hold all the arts and craft supplies for my family of five so it is all within easy reach. The new banquette is 60 inches wide and very comfortable. With three young children it has become the new favorite seating spot for meals, arts and crafts and homework.
