For a less intrepid DIY-er the assortment pictured above would be one intimidating pile of rocks. Not so for April. She transformed her courtyard into a relaxing spot, perfect for entertaining. Best of all, it’s super low maintenance so she can spend more time planning parties and less time watering grass!

From April: I am in love with the new look of my courtyard area, which was almost all do-it-yourself projects. We wanted a clean, streamlined space with a modern feel that would be as maintenance-free as possible. We pulled it off and have already hosted a dinner party out here.

The courtyard is the entrance to our home, you have to walk through it when you come to visit. It was overgrown, yet somehow always still brown and gross. It was infected with bugs, snakes and even a few bunnies. We wanted a more welcoming entrance, as well as a nice spot for small dinner parties.

We completed this “room” in six weeks as part of the One Room Challenge. We did all the projects ourselves, except for running the electrical wires for the new lamp posts.

We love the industrial and modern feel. We also love that we made it almost maintenance-free with a rock garden and year-round evergreen bushes.

April’s words of wisdom: Just try it. You’ll be surprised what you can do yourself when you give it a shot.
