Welcome to Apartment Therapy’s $32 Design Challenge. Finding the perfect piece of furniture is hard enough… but then it can be surprisingly tricky—and expensive—to style it just right for your home. We challenged five staffers to style five different areas of the home, from the entryway to a desk, with a budget of just $32. Follow along with the whole series here.

Challenge: Style a plain bed (starting with the mattress, pillows, and sheets) with $32

Where Bridget shopped:

  • Bed, Bath and Beyond
  • T.J. Maxx
  • Dollar Store

What she bought:

  • Lumbar pillow
  • Throw blanket
  • Four pillow cases

Big splurge: A cozy pink throw blanket from T.J. Maxx used up almost half of her budget.

Big saving: Bridget found black pillowcases at the Dollar Store for, naturally, a dollar each. “They’re so soft,” she says. They’re not real satin, but they feel like it.”

One tip to remember: Not sure where to start in choosing a color scheme? One idea: select a statement pillow for the center of the bed, and then pull colors from it for your other accents.
