Here’s the Backyard or Outdoor Workout You Should Try This Spring, According to Your Zodiac Sign

Warmer weather means a lot of things, including that you might be more inclined to enjoy a workout in the great outdoors. Whether you’ve got a house with a pool or live near a local hiking trail, now’s the time to take advantage of all your backyard (literal or figurative) has to offer.

Can’t decide how to get moving? Look to the stars for clues. Using astrology to help you choose your workout takes your preexisting tendencies into account, and you’re way more likely to stick with (and enjoy!) a form of exercise that plays to your natural strengths. Who knows? You might even find a new favorite type of fitness!

Your Sun sign in astrology represents your deepest self, and is the one people usually refer to the most (“I’m a Libra!”). A tip before you read on: if you’re not quite sure the workout listed below fits your Sun sign, check out your Rising sign too, as it’s the aspect of yourself you present to the world and can often be a dominant part of your personality.

Aries (March 21-April 19): Try a heart-pounding HIIT workout.

The first sign of the zodiac is known for always being on the move: dynamic, determined, and driven to use their skills to the fullest, this fire sign loves a physical challenge. A bodyweight HIIT workout that’s constantly mixing up the moves is a perfect fit for this sign (who also hates monotony). A routine that involves little to no equipment is the most outdoor-friendly, as you can take it with you wherever you go — and luckily, there are a slew of free streaming options if you’d like some extra guidance and motivation. 

Taurus (April 20-May 20): Flex your green thumb in the garden.

Taurus loves anything where they can get their hands dirty — literally. Whether it’s crafts or cooking, they enjoy feeling connected to whatever it is they’re doing on a tactical level. A day of gardening is the perfect way for this earth sign to work up a sweat, as it’s not only a sneaky workout but a way to tap into their innate patience and practicality.

Gemini (May 21-June 20): Hit the courts for a round of tennis.

Geminis are known for their dualistic personality — but they’re far from two-faced. Quick-witted, eager to learn, and cerebral, Gemini is ruled by Mercury, the planet of communication. A one-on-one game like tennis that involves both strategy and skill satisfies this air sign’s desire to stay mentally stimulated. Book a time slot at your local court, and bring a friend along for some active catching-up.

Cancer (June 21-July 22): Take a stroll around the neighborhood.

Imaginative and empathetic, Cancers love to tap into their emotions as well as the emotions of their loved ones. When a Cancer asks “How do you feel today?” trust they want the FULL answer. A long meandering walk around the neighborhood, while either doing some self-reflection or having an in-depth phone call with a friend, is a Cancer’s ideal way to get moving on the regular. Just be sure to wear your mask!

Leo (July 23-August 22): Reach new heights on a rebounder or trampoline.

This fire sign is ruled by the Sun and symbolized by the lion – so it should be no surprise that Leos love to bring the fire and feel like royalty. Creative, passionate, brave, and warm-hearted, a trampoline or rebounding (mini-trampoline) workout is the perfect fit for a Leo who loves feeling like they’re on top of the world and has charismatic energy to spare. A folding rebounding trampoline allows easy storage, transportation, and set-up, so you can easily jump for joy whether you’re on your patio or in the park. 

Virgo (August 23-September 22): Stream a mat Pilates class from your backyard.

Virgos have a reputation for being perfectionists — and that’s a great thing! A Virgo’s attention to detail and desire to be helpful means they’re someone you want on your side, and are usually game to give your work a second look. With its attention to form and meticulous details, a Pilates workout is this earth sign’s perfect fit. To make your next session backyard-friendly, stream a mat class from your lawn or deck — just roll out your mat on the grass and go.

Libra (September 23-October 22): Get flowing with an outdoor yoga session.

Diplomatic and gracious, this air sign is represented by the scales — and, fittingly, all about balance. Libras love harmony and hate any sort of injustice, making the teachings of yoga a perfect fit for some mindful movement. Taking your yoga practice out into nature makes sense, as doing so may boost meditation benefits and increase a sense of vitality. Not only will Libras appreciate flowing from pose to pose, but they’ll derive greater meaning and purpose by learning about the other limbs of yoga beyond asana.

Scorpio (October 23-November 21): Lace up your running shoes.

Scorpios are known for being enigmatic, but don’t mistake their air of mystery for meanness. This intense water sign is resourceful, passionate, assertive, and straightforward. For all these reasons, a solo outdoor run suits Scorpios well — the alone time gives them space to process all that goes in their imaginative mind, and definite starting and ending points provide Scorpios a sense of purpose and determination for their workout.

Sagittarius (November 22-December 21): Explore the trails on a hike.

Always eager to explore, a Sagittarius values independence first and foremost. Ruled by Jupiter, the planet of luck and exploration, this fire sign loves anything adventurous. The freedom to explore the trails and literally go off the beaten path makes a local hike right up Sagittarius’s alley. Before you go, check to see which trails are open, and which have been super-popular lately — the less crowded a trail is, the easier it will be to practice physical distancing with people outside of your household.

Capricorn (Dec 22-Jan 19): Challenge yourself with a kettlebell routine.

The hardworking and disciplined Capricorn is ruled by the planet Saturn, which is all about responsibility. Capricorns are determined to get what they set out to accomplish, love when there are clear rules to follow, and thrive on tried-and-true routines. If you’re a Capricorn, try learning a kettlebell routine, then tracking your progress over time. Even just one or two kettlebells can provide a multitude of options for an entire workout, from squats and snatches to curls and core work — making an easy piece of equipment to take with you outdoors. Try this full-body workout, which was designed specifically for outdoor athletes, but can benefit any fitness level. 

Aquarius (Jan 20-Feb 18): Find community in an outdoor group fitness class.

This air sign is known for being people-oriented and open-minded. Any outdoor workout that simultaneously provides a challenge and sense of community is perfect for an Aquarius, so seek out an outdoor group fitness class in your neighborhood. Bonus points if it’s on behalf of a good cause, as Aquarians are always ready to fight for what’s right. Some ways to find classes near you include checking the website of your local Parks and Recreation department to see what’s offered in your area, asking your nearest gym or community center if they’re offering programming, or call your local outdoors/activewear retail store for tips (as they’re often in the know about (or even hosting) community events).   

Pisces (Feb 19-March 20): Go for a swim in the pool or ocean.

Water driven, ruled by Neptune, and symbolized by the fish… You can probably guess the perfect outdoor workout for a Pisces. Swimming, whether in a backyard pool or in the ocean, comes naturally to people who fall under this sign. Not only does it fuel their desire to be as close to water as possible, but it allows them to express their gentle and intuitive nature. Swimming, to a Pisces, is the ultimate moving meditation.
