October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, which makes this month the perfect opportunity to add a new furry friend to your home if you’ve been thinking about becoming a pet parent or adding to your brood.

After the pandemic-induced pet adoption frenzy that saw people across the country clearing shelters and adding to their four-legged families, Yelp data found consumer interest in animal shelters dropped 41 percent from March 2020 to March 2021, which means plenty of pets are still out there looking for their forever homes.

As a way to help highlight some of the many rescues in the U.S. doing incredible work every day to protect and nurture adoptable animals, the digital business review platform shared with Apartment Therapy their list of the top 15 places to adopt a dog — although, of course, if you’re more of a cat lover, you’re sure to find the feline of your dreams at these rescues, too.

Yelp narrowed down the list by identifying businesses that are active as of late September 2021 in the animal shelters category, then ranking those spots using a number of factors including the total number of reviews and subsequently high ratings from reviewers. They prioritized geographic diversity by only including one or two businesses per state, but the list makes for a great jumping off point to find a shelter in your area doing great work every day for animals who need a permanent home.
