Estate sales, yard sales, and antique shops were regular weekend destinations for my brother and me as kids. My parents, always on the hunt for period-appropriate decor for our Staten Island 19th-century house, made sure of it. Since then, I’ve had a love for home design and…read more

Living in a compact apartment means things can get chaotic quickly. As a parent of two young children — one currently navigating potty training and the other an avid fan of markers and Play-Doh — I’m no stranger to sudden messes. Although my cordless vacuum is a lifesaver for daily tidy-ups, I realized I had never truly deep-cleaned my upholstery, rugs, or carpets. This led me to test the Bissell Revolution HydroSteam. It turned out to be exactly what I needed; in fact, I’ve shared it with relatives who have since become just as obsessed as I am. Here’s why this cleaner is a must-have for busy households.

What Is the Bissell Revolution HydroSteam?

Designed to tackle even the most stubborn, aged stains, the Bissell Revolution HydroSteam is a versatile deep cleaner for carpets and upholstery that utilizes a combination of steam, water, and cleaning solution. This heavy-duty machine is equipped with an XL DirtLifter PowerBrush and Bissell’s innovative Hydrosteam Technology, including a dedicated Steam Pretreat mode specifically for loosening tough fibers. Though it brings impressive results thanks to its sizable 1-gallon clean water tank, the machine’s dimensions (42″ H x 16.5″ W x 11.9″ D) and 20-pound heft necessitate significant storage room (unless you prefer to take it apart completely after each session).

For reaching various surfaces, it features a 20-foot power cord and a 7-foot hose, making it suitable for high-traffic areas, rugs, pet beds, and stairs. The set comes with two trial-sized formulas, a nozzle clean-out tool, a 4-inch cleanout tool for the brush, and a spraying crevice tool designed for furniture and staircases.

Why I Love the Bissell Revolution HydroSteam

Initially, I questioned if the Bissell Revolution HydroSteam would suit my needs. Given its substantial size, I was hesitant about the fit, yet I was certain my rugs required a serious cleaning. I began by consulting the manual to assemble the components, a step I highly recommend. The instructions provide crucial details, such as the fact that the HydroSteam is not designed for dry vacuuming and cannot handle significant amounts of pet hair or loose debris. Consequently, a thorough vacuuming beforehand is essential. The assembly process itself was straightforward, and the machine includes a convenient wrap for its long power cord.

You can start with an optional pre-treatment phase, which is particularly effective for tackling set-in stains. Since my carpets didn’t have any obvious spots, I chose to move straight to the main cleaning process.

After filling the clean water tank — which is separate from the dirty water reservoir — you’re ready to begin. The device features three specialized settings: Steam Pretreat, which utilizes targeted heat for tough stains; SteamWash Max Clean Mode for a comprehensive deep clean using solution, water, and steam; and Quick Dry Mode, which optimizes for a faster clean and dry time. While the operation is quite noisy, the outcome is remarkably rewarding. Despite being a robust, heavy-duty appliance, the smooth rollers make it surprisingly easy to maneuver. Although Bissell suggests a drying time of up to eight hours, I found that using the Quick Dry Mode left my rugs dry in just 30 minutes with excellent results.

To operate, plug the unit in and toggle the mode button to your preferred setting. Use the pedal to recline the handle. To clean, perform “wet passes” by engaging the spray trigger on the handle, followed by “dry passes” where the trigger is released. Repeat this process until you no longer see water being extracted through the front nozzle.

For stairs and upholstery, the included hose and crevice tool are simple to attach. Just select your desired mode — SteamWash or Quick Dry — position the tool over the surface, and pull the trigger. Apply downward pressure while drawing the tool backward. To maintain the machine afterward, simply have it suction up a bowl of fresh water for roughly 15 seconds to flush out any internal debris.

The cleanup process is eye-opening. Seeing the water in the dirty tank turn dark immediately was admittedly gross, but it was so satisfying that it motivated me to keep going. The brush components disassemble easily for maintenance, and you will be shocked by the amount of grime the machine manages to pull out of your carpets.

Ultimately, while the Bissell HydroSteam is ideal for larger homes, it performed exceptionally well on the low-pile rugs and furniture in my smaller apartment. It even managed to lift dried-on Play-Doh that had been embedded in the fibers, making everything appear brand new. It is a powerful tool that can completely revitalize your flooring, couches, chairs, and more. In fact, it’s so good, it’s gross.
