“The reconversion of an old parking space into a loft is a project whose goal was to achieve an extremely intimate space, a shell of kindness, love and protection, frozen in time, to hide, relax and enjoy, far from ordinary life,” Ferlito writes of his home.

Ferlito explains that design themes in the loft include words like “shelter,” “sustainability,” “handcraft,” and more, and that’s shown in ways like the use of raw and natural materials around the space.

“Another characteristic that made the project sustainable has been the use of recycled material and the artisanal execution of the worksite; finishing of the walls, floor, roof, decoration, sanitary elements and fittings like tap and faucets are craft made,” he writes, explaining that most of the furniture and some of the lamps and decor accessories are also custom.

“When I entered in that place for the first time it was immediately clear to me the potential to generate a gentle hideout spot and I found a lot of inspiration from the leftover materials present around; so I decided to use [them],” he writes.

The interior stairs, for example, are made from a metal sheet that had been used for mezzanine storage. The white tiles installed were actually found in a corner. The rounded kitchen table was made from some old planks.

Ferlito was also inspired by materials found in the space. The material of the curtains, which are tall and accentuate the tall ceilings, is reminiscent of some jute bags that had been in the space. Even an old piece of copper gave him the idea for the kitchen and bathroom fixtures.

“I really tried to take advantage as much as possible of everything [that] was found there, using creativity, remembering the origins of the space, and layering all with a touch of different cozy textures, giving the magical atmosphere I was looking for this project.”
