Those who decorate for the holidays learned the hard way that cute seasonal decor can be expensive. But, as one TikTok user shows, it doesn’t have to be. Rather than drop hundreds on decor to fit within your desired color scheme, Hammsmom (@hammsmom) says adding seasonal color can be as cheap as just a few dollars.

“In the past, this has been controversial. But this is one of the ways I like to decorate for holidays,” Hammsmom says in a September 19 TikTok video. “I go to the thrift store and pick up these hardcover books for about a dollar each and I go through and pick colors for the holidays. Oranges for fall, reds for Christmas, etc. And then I add those in with my fall decorations around my house. It’s super inexpensive and looks so cute.”

Cheap, easy, and brilliant.

“WHY IS THIS CONTROVERSIAL THIS IS GENIUS,” one commenter wrote. Another added, “Same! It’s a great way to recycle books!”

And the best part is that you can keep the protective jackets safe during the holiday season and then re-donate the books after the holidays if you know you’ll want to switch up your style for next year.

Plus, sometimes you score a book that’s a must-read. According to the commenters, the book Hammsmom grabbed called “The Great Alone” is a winner.

Save your money and head to the thrift store to stock up on hardcovers for this year’s decorating plan. Your home will look so colorful and classy and it will be your little secret that there was little to no effort involved.
