A great sconce can vary a room’s lighting options and create interest and depth. Of course, it can also create a headache when it comes to installation — or a total obstacle if you’re a renter — because unlike some other forms of accent lighting, adding a new sconce to a room requires cutting into your wall. Even a plug-in sconce needs to be mounted.

And those are the reasons I was so excited when I came across Kelly Mindell of Studio DIY’s (@studiodiy) Instagram Story last week about bookshelf lights. In the story, Mindell shared a photo of this brass Ballard Designs Ivy Bookshelf Light on a slate gray bookshelf. It’s attached to a marble base that looks like a bookend, which Mindell nestled between red-bound books.

The light comes with a lampshade in 24 different shape and fabric combinations, but Mindell noted that she topped hers with her own red and terracotta-striped version.

“Alright folks,” Mindell wrote to her followers, “how many of you knew about bookshelf lights and didn’t tell me!?!? I’m… obsessed!?!?”

I admit I did not know about these, and I am so into them! Below, you’ll find the bookshelf sconce that Mindell chose, plus a couple of additional options. Don’t mind me — I’ll just be here contemplating where I can use these in my own home.
