This Super Popular Olive Oil Brand Just Added a Surprising Item to Their Line (and I Love It!)
It’s no secret that we’re huge Brightland fans at Kitchn. The direct-to-consumer brand creates delicious olive oils and vinegars that we can’t stop slathering over pretty much everything (even ice cream!). The brand has frequently delighted us with new flavor additions to their pantry staples line, but their newest launch is, well … surprisingly refreshing! Priced at $42, DIGESTIF is the kind of candle you light up after you’re done shutting down your kitchen for the day, or even right before your guests arrive (to combat all those garlic smells clinging to just about every surface). Made using fragrance notes of neroli, vetiver, and black pepper, the candle also contains the brand’s hero ingredient: olive oil.
And no, it’s not like they added olive oil just because they have an unlimited supply on hand! Essential oils blended in the candle need to be paired with a carrier oil in order to protect the molecules from heat so that they don’t burn off right away. Incorporating olive oil into the formula does a lot to improve the life of the candle and the throw of the scent. Not to mention, it smells absolutely divine!
As for the unique blend of fragrances, they were inspired by founder and CEO Aishwarya Iyer’s South Indian and American background. “Vetiver is a plant native to South India, and so DIGESTIF’s vetiver and black pepper notes immediately take me to my grandparents’ home in South India,” she explains. “The orange blossom and neroli notes remind me of California’s gorgeous natural bounty, so I feel like a part of my heritage, history and personal story is poured into each candle.” We love that! Plus, as with the rest of their products, Brightland worked closely with California farmers to source locally produced ingredients.
The soy candle is vegan, paraben free, and phthalate free, so you can enjoy your 40 hours of burn time without worrying about any nasties infiltrating your air. As for what the candle smells like? I got the chance to try it out and it’s unlike any candle I have smelled before. The scent is subtle yet sharp, with an almost cleansing quality that revitalizes the air around it. The first time I lit the candle, I was transported back to my best friend’s house, where her mother would light up hand-rolled incense sticks (aka agarbattis) at their tiny temple every evening during prayer time. I have been lighting up my candle every night since I received it, just to envelop myself in those beautiful memories.
