Before and After: This High-Impact Powder Room Overhaul Cost Just $65 (!!!)
After Rebecca Hatfield moved into her fixer-upper, she decided that the powder room would be project number one. “I knew the room was small enough to get done quickly,” she says. “I also knew that paint was going to transform this space and give me that real wow factor that would motivate me to get started on other spaces.”
The space was functional, but burgundy paint on every wall made it feel even smaller and darker than it was. The goal: brighten it up, and add some much-needed spunk.
Get this: Rebecca’s entire room makeover—from burgundy on burgundy to what you see above—cost: about $65. Sixty! Five! Dollars!
“Paint was the biggest game changer for this space,” Rebecca explains. “I painted the walls, the vanity, a secondhand light fixture, an old mirror and, to top it all off, I hand-painted this accent wall.” That pattern—a freehanded brushstroke-y chevron—was inspired by a wallpaper she found and loved. Rebecca created her version with just a brush and a piece of cardboard to help guide her lines.
For the wall color, Rebecca used Behr’s Heavy Cream; for the brushstroke-y accent wall, she used Behr’s Studio Taupe. The vanity is painted with Fusion Mineral Paint’s Lichen.
The mirror, which Rebecca already owned, was also a paint project. Previously silver, Rebecca had used layers of white, brown, and gray paint to make it look like weathered wood. The rest of the bathroom’s accessories, including hanging baskets and a charming vase, were all thrifted.
No surprise here: The hero in this redo was paint! “I am absolutely in awe of the power of paint in this space,” says Rebecca. “It looks and feels like a completely different room.”
