Alle Fister—owner of Bollare, a communications firm that works with well-known beauty and fashion brands—met Don Popkes 10 years ago. Six and a half years ago the couple got married and bought this house, their first home and a total fixer upper. “While I was taking the lead on planning our wedding, Don was taking the lead on taking our home down to the studs and giving it a completely fresh, dream home style!” reports Alle.

In the 1960s, the house was owned by Caroll Shelby, a race car driver-turned automotive designer. But while it was obvious the home once had style, when Alle and Don purchased it, it needed a lot of work. They describe the house as having “great mid-century modern bones, but had totally lost its way with owners making odd design choices over the years!”

Apartment Therapy Survey:

Our Style: Modern and minimal meets FUN and colorful.

Inspiration: Natural light and nature.

Favorite Element: The windows and view.

Biggest Challenge: Keeping negative space—we love the openness of our home… but also love collecting cool pieces or art and furniture from our vast travels.

What Friends Say: “Can Don please design my home!?”

Biggest Embarrassment: My closet. Owning a fashion consulting business everyone wants to see my closet… and it is always just a little too crammed!

Proudest DIY: A painting inside our entry that Don painted.

Biggest Indulgence: Our Missoni Mah Jong from Roche Bobois.

Best Advice: Keep our walls and floors neutral and let fun accessories be those pops of color and texture that you can change with the season.

Dream Sources: World travel!
