Name: Calvin and Kelly
Location: Atlanta, GA

My better half, Kelly and I took on the task of building our dream home on an empty lot in an up and coming neighborhood in Old Fourth Ward, Atlanta. We conveniently had close friends that were amazing architects and were willing to go on the journey with us on this creation.

We had a few significant hardships along the way, some typical to most building experiences – Builder that took our money, bad sub-contractors, etc. You name it. It took a lot of sweat, tears and good friends to get the house to where it is today. We’re just thankful that we’re still together after this process!!

One of our favorite things about our home is the interconnectedness between floors, levels. We were certain didn’t want to be closed off from each other if we were on a different floor. We also wanted a lot of natural light which we feel the architects successfully accomplished as we never turn on lights during the daytime.

Another favorite is how the architecture creates unexpected moments throughout the house. They really opened up the space to flow throughout. It makes for a lot of fun moments with our son Nash!

We also love the different spaces we have to display our art and books. They aren’t hidden or stacked always. They are there for display and engaging our guests to take a look.

We had a local artist, John Otte paint each one of our panels of our house. It created interesting texture and made what seems to be just a black house a lot more interesting in person. Very cool.

We wouldn’t have gotten through this process without our architects, Brian Bell and David Yocum from bldgs.org. They were ever so diligent to see the process through several different builders, many subs and many moments of wondering if we could finish our home.

Thanks, Calvin!
