I Looked at Nearly 100 Dressers for My Small Bedroom Before Finding One That Checked Every Box
When my husband and I started making over our primary bedroom, finding our dream dresser was high on the list. We wanted something with ample storage and well-made drawers, but it also had to bring some serious style. The catch? We didn’t have a ton of wall space to work with, so I needed something under 70 inches wide that would still have enough presence to hold its own in the room.
If I’m being honest, I must have looked at a hundred dressers before finding the CB2 Paul McCobb Connoisseur Eight-Drawer Dresser. I like to take my time when deciding on a major furniture purchase. (Big Virgo energy!) Every time I thought I’d found the one, the reviews scared me off. The drawers were too shallow. Construction was questionable. Assembly was a bit of a nightmare. Then I found this one, with its beautiful oak finish, delicate brass details, and glowing reviews, and knew I just had to see it in person.
What Is the CB2 Paul McCobb Connoisseur Eight-Drawer Dresser?
Designed by Paul McCobb and originally introduced in 1954, the Connoisseur dresser is one of those pieces that somehow feels both vintage and completely current at the same time. At 66 inches wide, I’d say it has a relatively compact footprint for a dresser with this much storage. There are eight drawers total: two slimmer drawers across the top, and six deeper ones below.
The details are what really sold me. The dresser is made with American white oak and oak veneers, with sleek slim legs, brass pulls, and a gorgeous brass crossbar running between the legs.
Why I Love the CB2 Paul McCobb Connoisseur Dresser
Before ordering, we actually went to our local CB2 to see a sample of the black oak in person. I wanted to make sure the wood grain was as beautiful as it looked online before committing to such a major piece. It was. Another box checked. But what I appreciate even more now that we’ve lived with it is just how functional it is. The six larger bottom drawers hold a lot, and they soft-close beautifully, even when I’ve pushed their storage capacity to the limit. (Please tell me I’m not the only person who believes that if a drawer still closes, technically there’s room for one more thing.) And because the dresser arrived fully assembled with white-glove delivery, there was no Saturday afternoon spent deciphering furniture instructions or wondering why we had three screws left over.
Our bedroom makeover has quite a few pieces competing for the MVP award, but this dresser gets more than its fair share of “Ooh, where is that from?” compliments from friends and family. The brass pulls and crossbar are small details, but they’re exactly what keep it from looking like just another basic storage piece. At 66 inches wide, it fits the wall exactly the way I hoped it would, with enough breathing room around it that the room doesn’t feel crowded. We even have space left for the floor lamp I’ve been plotting. And really, what more could a small-space-loving maximalist ask for?
I own the black oak version (featured here), and sadly this dresser is no longer currently available (although it is often re-released on CB2’s website, so keep an eye out if you’re intrigued), but CB2 still sells so many other gorgeous furnishings from this Paul McCobb collection that are worth a closer look — a few are even on sale.
