Two years ago, what first fascinated Adriano Tawin and his wife, Angelin Chua, about their 735-square-foot apartment in Clementi, Singapore, were the huge windows and spanning views (which, according to Tawin, are a design rarity in the area).

“We are blessed with big windows that face the east, lining the length of the apartment, and the morning light would illuminate the rooms in a golden light, especially beautiful during the golden hour,” Tawin, founder of Stacked Store, writes.

It wasn’t only the natural light that caught their attention. The apartment was also near a shopping mall that doubles as a major public transportation station, which takes them to central Singapore in only 30 minutes. But the space had a lot of potential, too.

Initially, the apartment had two bedrooms, but the couple removed the second bedroom and used that space to enlarge their living area. Tawin says that the smaller size made them intentional about the furniture they brought into their home.

“We opted for furniture that is compact and can be moved easily, which allows for versatility of layout,” Tawin shares. Making these clever home choices is something that Tawin is skilled at, as Stacked Store seeks to help Singapore renters, buyers, and sellers make smarter choices.

And speaking of furniture, Tawin guesses that around 95 percent of the items in the apartment are secondhand, and 100 percent of the items are a beautiful blend of both of their styles. He’s half Indonesian and half Thai, so mixing influences from his heritage brings him joy. Chua looks at objects’ practicality and appreciates earthy tones and wood and ceramic textures.

“In a way, our styles complement each other, and knowing what each other likes helps us curate the look of the home,” Tawin says.
