Alyssa and her wife, Elise, have owned this 1,500-square-foot house for a year: Our home is in the historic district of East Hills and was built in 1905. It has the perfect amount of old charm mixed with new. My wife, Elise; our dogs, Calvin and Dolly; and our scared shadow cat, Clara, live there.

My wife and I are both graphic designers. We both like change and reinventing ourselves. Our interior design style changes based on the structure of the building we live in. We were previously living in a modern high-rise in Chicago, but decided we wanted a slower pace of life. We decided to buy a home in Michigan and feel like we are going back to our roots. We have a lot of natural materials and textures with neutral color palettes to reflect a calm state.

What is your favorite room and why? The living room. The room has some cowgirl and desert flair to it. I love the vibe of the space. It also has a great flow for entertaining.
