Living in New York City means finding a way to appreciate its quirks, the hustle and bustle, and the non-stop grind, but for even the most seasoned city dwellers, the city can sometimes get overwhelming quickly. That’s why marketer, event planner, TikToker, and writer Ashley Watson wanted her 200-square-foot studio apartment to be like a sanctuary.

“It’s my safe haven, my reprieve from the beautiful chaos that is New York City,” Watson, who runs a mental health blog, Manic! at the Disco, writes. “It’s the place my introverted self goes to recharge after long days pretending to be extroverted.”

Watson’s rental apartment is tucked away in Manhattan’s quaint Greenwich Village neighborhood, and the design details make it the perfect place to retreat. Whether it’s the crisp white couch, the soft-colored gingham comforter, or the abundant natural light (the prime time is around 9:30 in the morning, Watson says), the space oozes tranquility.

“I tried to channel ‘Coastal Grandma meets summer in the South of France,’ and by that, I literally mean I want my apartment to feel like a hug from grandma and taking that first sip of summer wine on vacation … simultaneously,” Watson shares.

Even though Watson’s apartment is on the smaller side, the personal growth she’s experienced in her space is huge. “It’s the place that has literally defined the independence I have felt in my mid-to-late 20s, and I wouldn’t trade having lived here for ANYTHING else,” Watson writes.
