Best Small Toilets: Toto, Kohler, Duravit & 3 MoreDesign Ideas
Bring on the small, yet powerful, toilets that allow you to save space and still sit down in style. Oh, and yes, you will also save lots of water as well! When I started doing this list nearly ten years ago, this was a novel category. It is no longer. Our reader favorites continue to be these brands: Toto, Duravit and Kohler, and while there’s still debate about the higher prices for these toilets and problems with “streaking” they seem to be generally winning people over.

The 6 Best Water Filter Solutions I’ve TestedProjects & Improvements
Since starting Apartment Therapy, I’ve always felt it’s good to do everything you can to make your home comfortable and clean (in as little time as possible), and that air and water quality were fundamental. Living in New York City, I’ve never had a problem with the water, but when I started to drink cold filtered water I loved the difference. Particularly when making coffee or tea, filtered water really seemed to improve the taste. Years later, this is what I’ve learned.

How To Paint Your Floors and Not Screw it UpProjects & Improvements
Years ago when I decided to paint the floors in my small summer house, most people were shocked (including my parents). Bare wood floors were so chic and such a staple of 90’s style, that painting them over and covering them up seemed sacrilegious. I didn’t think so anymore. See how they turned out… The floors were cheap, solid oak floors, in great need of refinishing.

The Best Soda MakersDesign Ideas
Soda makers, otherwise known as carbonators, may be the kitchen appliance you probably don’t realize you need. Bubbly drinks like seltzer and Prosecco are typically associated with special occasions, but the rise in popularity of flavored drinks like La Croix are making carbonated beverages more accessible, not to mention more fun. Getting that bubbly taste at home hasn’t always been easy.

Top Vintage Cast Iron Pans: Griswold, Wagner & LodgeDesign Ideas
I love my cast iron cookware and use it every day for everything. While I don’t mind the newly made Lodge, I have an old Griswold just like the one above (made between 1919-40) that I bought in a second hand store years ago and it’s SO much better. With thinner iron sides all around, it’s much smoother, lighter and easier to maneuver around the stove and sink. It still carries heat and cleans up easily like any cast iron pan.

Modern Round Dining Tables: West Elm, IKEA and MoreDesign Ideas
We love round dining tables, mostly because they allow you to squeeze more people into a small space. Here are some of our favorites, from new designs to enduring classics. If we’re looking at IKEA staples, there’s of course the Tulip-style DOCKSTA, but we see the beauty in the simplistic SALMI, too. Chrome and glass, understated, yet totally modern.

We’ve spent a good part of April bringing you travel tips and tricks, and I hope you’ve been inspired to plan a little get-away! But I still think you can get a lot of value out of guidebooks, especially for big trips.

I was reminded yesterday of how cool IXXI wall graphics are when I walked into a friend’s home and saw them covering the walls in a number of rooms. I blogged about their stock collection back in 2011, but they now make it easy to upload your own hi-res images and create big wall art out of them. This 55.1″ x 86.6″ piece is a lovely and huge version of a classic painting, “Flowers in a Glass Vase” by J.Dsz. de Heem from the RijksMuseum.

Best Ergonomic StoolsDesign Ideas
I recently made the switch to an adjustable standing desk in my office, and it has made a world of difference. That said, I soon realized that my regular desk chair just wasn’t going to cut it anymore. With a more active desk I needed a more active seating option — and it turns out that the medical community agrees. Active seating — specifically ergonomic stools — helps to strengthen core and back muscles, while allowing the spine to achieve its natural curve.

The Kitchen Gadget That Sold Me on Kitchen GadgetsDesign Ideas
I love gadgets, but not usually in the kitchen. Kitchen gadgets are often fads that come and go. Everything I find, however, comes with a good recommendation and this one came from a friend in LA, who emailed me with this crazy happy recommendation: “Maxwell! This thing is so exciting to use and it makes chopping so fun. I use mine almost every day.” Was she being paid to tell me this? Turns out, no — she genuinely loves this thing. This is an absolutely unique and comfy and beautiful and EXPENSIVE backpack I photographed at the NYNow Show two weeks ago. The folks from Peg & Awl, Margaux and Walter, are driven to make things out of reclaimed materials in Philadelphia, “from olde things, treasures found and recovered from misfortune and neglect, relics of the unusual, the confused and the macabre, cut and pulled and built into wearable curiosities, inscribable keepsakes and useable, longlasting treasures.
