There are many paint colors that can add warmth to a room, and when you think of those colors, your mind might go to shades like tan, brown, and red, but even some yellows and greens can add warmth. The paint color in renter and DIYer Imani Keal’s (@imaniathome) bedroom certainly does.

The room started off as a blank slate, but several paint projects gave it the personality Imani was looking for.

The bedroom walls are color-drenched in a mustard-meets-green.

Imani used Valspar’s Coconut Husk for the baseboards, walls, window frames, and ceiling, and she tells Apartment Therapy that though the reaction to the paint color from her followers wasn’t initially positive, she loves it. “I’m all about using the darkest, moodiest, and boldest paint colors in my apartment because it’s fun!” Imani says on TikTok, adding that she loves how the green-brown looks in the west-facing light in her bedroom.

Because Imani’s apartment is over a century old, she had to prep the walls and trim before painting them. She sanded the walls, removed her windows and cleaned them, and scrubbed the baseboards with soap and water.

The nightstands are upcycled.

The nightstands in Imani’s bedroom are painted in Valspar’s Renew Blue. But before they were the teal beauties you see today, they were shiny, brown, and dated-looking. Imani sanded them, made repairs with wood glue, and painted them.

“While these nightstands are different, painting them the same color makes them feel cohesive,” Imani says on Instagram, adding that she loves the way they pop against the green-brown backdrop.

Lastly, Imani’s bed is from The Inside, her chandelier is from a consignment shop, and she has an IKEA PAX wardrobe at the foot of her bed (painted the same green color as the walls) for lots of storage.
