Michael Pybus is a self-employed artist, so when it came to looking for a home to purchase, his budget was tight. He was in need of a two-bedroom home because he needed a room to use as an art studio. After having several offers fall through, Michael found himself back at square one.

The cool lamp on the mantel is the Oceanic. The old Victorian mirror Michael found on eBay for £70. The wavy green dresser is vintage IKEA. When asked about the oldest thing in his home, Michael replied that "it would be the live rock in my reef tank, which is made of ancient fossilised corals, making it millions of years old."

While refreshing listings that were in his budget, the listing for this 710-square-foot townhouse popped up. Michael had seen it before, but it had previously been priced out of his range. Realizing the price had been reduced, he “immediately called to book a viewing and after seeing the property put in an offer, which was accepted right away.”

We've toured a previous home of Michael's that was similarly boldly colored, and a few items from his previous homes are in this home, too. The IKEA receipt rug is from IKEA. The curtains are made from two vintage fabrics that his sister sewed together for him.

He’s owned this 100-year-old townhouse for a year now, and in that year he’s done a ton of work to the space he described as “the landlord special” when he moved in. “Everything was painted white and there was a new plain kitchen installed. Not very homely but a blank canvas, which was absolutely perfect for me to come in and put my mark on,” he writes.

Michael redecorated every room himself, splashing tons of bright colors on many of the walls, except for the room he uses as his art studio, which he kept as all white. “I treat my home as an extension of my art,” he writes. “As an artist I use every color available in my paintings and enjoy combining them in unusual ways. I apply this same approach to how I decorate my home. I want it to feel like stepping into one of my paintings.”

The flooring in the kitchen is flower-themed linoleum. The yellow chairs are IKEA but discontinued. The ultramarine blue paint is from Vintro Paint.

“The feeling my home gives me when I’m in it, it feels cosy and visually stimulating but also is very practical and provides me with everything I need to live and work,” Michael writes. “I’m particularly happy with how the kitchen turned out with the flower floor and ultramarine ceiling. I also enjoy sitting in my living room looking out at my bay window full of plants.”
